Russia! magazine announces the reading series. From February to June, the magazine will be celebrated with a reading series at Freebird Bookstore in New York City. The events will take place on the last Thursday of every month and include appearances by novelists Lara Vapnyar and Anya Ulinich, as well as the magazine's other authors and subjects.

 
   
JANUARY 30, 2008  

The third issue of the unique glossy quarterly (recently called a "favorite new magazine" by Conde Nast Portfolio) hits the newsstands nationwide on February 8. "This is by far the best issue we've yet put together," says RUSSIA!'s editor-in-chief Michael Idov. "We've basically found the tone that allows us to print an essay about Russia's imperial claims on Caspian oil on one page and goofy street fashions on the next one. In other words, we're precisely as schizophrenic as our subject."

Russia! magazine presented actor Viggo Mortensen, the star of David Cronenberg's hit Eastern Promises, with its inaugural Rolling R – an annual award for the best "Russian" performance by a Hollywood actor. The official citation commends Mortensen for his "sensitive, multifaceted and authentic" portrayal of Nikolai, a morally conflicted thug.

Russia!'s contributor Daria Vaisman just published an excellent story on recent events in Georgia in Slate. She was "partly tear-gassed" while writing it. Look for Vaisman's more lighthearted take on Georgia in the Winter issue of Russia! magazine.

This Halloween, Russia! magazines hopes that its readers will be the most stylish people at the parties while wearing the free an easy to make Putin costume. It's time to add characters to the US Halloween character portfolio, says Russia! magazine and asks the readers to email photos of them in the fabulous Putin costume. Russophobe and Russophile mugs, limited edition mugs produced by Russia! magazine for its subscribers and friends, went on sale on Russia's website. The Russophobe mug is priced at $15.30 - celebrating the birthday of Ivan the Terrible. The Russophile mug costs 16.72 (obvious number for history buffs.) The mug will arrive in a box wrapped in a newspaper (according to a unique Russian packaging know-how). We ship mugs for free. In 2008 we will report which mug - the Russophile or the Russophobe - turns out to be more poplar. The mugs celebrate a new column in the magazine, which appears in the second issue (with a bear on the cover).

The second issue of Russia! (with a bear on the cover) will go on sale August 20, 2007. It will be available in all Barnes and Noble bookstores, Borders and other US chains. It will also be sold in the UK, Russia, Sweden and Estonia.

Russian professional design community discusses the premier issue of Russia! magazine and is outraged by similarity of the logo to that of The Public Theater and is thrilled by the “rake on the moon” image on the cover.

As promised, first 8 Russia! magazine subscribers received the "Inspiration" chocolate bar along with their subscription. The "Inspiration" chocolate was among the few things that people suggested as "gifts to bring from Russia." The chocolate went to California, Texas, New York, Arizona and West Canada.
