Curious Facts of Road Construction

Ironically, it is cheaper to build the road from Adler to Sochi, the capital of 2014 Winter Olympics, from actual $100 bills and oysters than from asphalt.

Russia is in construction for the Winter Olympics and it has to build new roads from scratch to be able to accommodate hundreds of thousands of athletes and tourists alike. The construction is mainly financed by the government which allocated billions of dollars for the effort.

Russian Esquire reviewed the proposed budget for the Adler-Sochi highway and calculated how thick the road would be with the stated budget, if the road was made of $100 bills, oysters, black caviar, and other materials.

Early this year, 24 hours before the International Olympic Committee inspectors landed in Sochi, the Black Sea-resort town which will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, there was an emergency meeting held in several local schools. Teachers were instructed to put on their best clothes, pack their best luggage and hand-pick five students each. Instead of going to class the next day, they were told to arrive at the local airport and stay there for a full day, posing as tourists and making the airport look packed with travelers.
