As a hardcore 90210 fan, I wholeheartedly endorse Donna Martin becoming editor-in-chief of RUSSIA! Zhukova (and her sugar daddy Abramovich) is nothing compared to Spelling. Nothing!

The irony is that Zhukova can be the editor of POP. She will not be copyediting the articles, but she, through her connections and through her international recognition, will be able to talk to major advertisers and contributors, just because she knows them personally and because they all have been dyeing to be invited to her parties. POP made a smart move, for fraction of the cost to get a very able door opener. And good looking too.

Tori would do the same for RUSSIA!, so it's not such a bad idea.

Putin Goes Newsroom Hopping

 by Katya Tylevich
Vladimir Putin made his presence felt in Russia’s Kremlin-controlled newsrooms this week -- more than usual, that is. Not only did state press agency RIA Novosti come out with a video titled “Prime Minister Visits Russia’s Most Advanced Newsroom” (that being their own), but this just in from Anglophone Kremlin cheerleader Russia Today: “Putin Visits RT.” That’s as much a coincidence as the visits themselves were spontaneous.

Moscow's Mayor Sues The New York Times and Wins

 by Russia! Staff
This Friday, Moscow District Court issued a judgement against The New York Times for defamation of the Moscow Mayor. Kommersant, a Russian business daily newspaper, reports that Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov filed a lawsuit against the Times and its reporter Clifford Levy for statements which "are false and give the mayor the negative image."
Writing about Russia always carries a whiff of proselytizing. The reason is simple: people tend to either be obsessed with it (that includes the obsessive loathing, too) or know next to nothing about it; the first group are invariably the ones doing the writing for the second one. As a result, even the best writers are forced to pick from a woefully tiny toolbox of memes and metaphors that would make the material “sing” to the general public. Below, the five journalistic devices we never, ever want to see used again.
