Beautiful Naked Russian Girls Still Improve Magazine Sales

Successfully fighting the severe media recession, a popular magazine uses its glossy pages as God intended: to print photos of stunning naked Russian go-go dancers.

Afisha, a popular Moscow events and listings magazine, found if not innovative then effective way to combat the decline in revenues, experienced by most Russian publishers. The solution: print what people want. And what do people want amid a flow of gloomy economic and political news? Photos of beautiful (and naked) blond go-go dancers from the busiest Moscow night clubs. And, of course, the photos must be accompanied by interviews where girls confirm that (just as we expected) they are also getting their degrees in economics, don't have sex with clients and want to find a good husband soon.

Our friends at the Afisha publishing house confirm that the "Striptease" issue is likely to become one of the most popular issues this year.

Yes, we know, it's not really "news"; we just wanted to brag a little and give a small hint to our editor.

So, meet some of the girls:

Putin Goes Newsroom Hopping

 by Katya Tylevich
Vladimir Putin made his presence felt in Russia’s Kremlin-controlled newsrooms this week -- more than usual, that is. Not only did state press agency RIA Novosti come out with a video titled “Prime Minister Visits Russia’s Most Advanced Newsroom” (that being their own), but this just in from Anglophone Kremlin cheerleader Russia Today: “Putin Visits RT.” That’s as much a coincidence as the visits themselves were spontaneous.

The Daily Mail Doesn't Know Which Russian Oligarch is Naomi Campbell's Boyfriend

 by Marina Galperina
Naomi Campbell just caused another world wide media stir by scratching and whacking an Italian paparazzi with a handbag while on vacation with her Russian billionaire boyfriend, who the US and UK press keeps saying is Mikhail Prokhorov. It's actually Vladislav Doronin. Oops.

We Stole Your Money, But Wasn’t It Fun? Remembering MMM

 by Andrew Biliter
In light of the pending Bernie Madoff indictment, we thought we’d revisit one of our favorite Ponzi schemes: MMM. The Mavrodi brothers, Sergei and Vyacheslav, along with third “M” Marina Muravieva, scammed their countrymen out of roughly $1.5 billion in the mid-’90s by promising investors a ridiculous 1,000% return on what would now be called "micro" investments. They were so good at promotion that by 1994, Boris Yeltsin had to issue a decree forbidding companies to advertise based on projected earnings. But while Madoff’s securities fraudulence leaves us with only sorrow, anger and debt, MMM left behind a rich cultural legacy in addition to those things. We’re talking, of course, about their TV commercials.
