Bad Art For Putin

So, Shepard "Hope Poster" Fairey is still trying to ride that co-opted optimism wave — he's just co-edited the new Art for Obama book. Well, Russia's got a dusty stockpile of old presidential art too. Well, it's not "presidential" anymore/yet (Medvedev's still keeping Putin's seat warm for him until the next election). And it's less art-book and more tacky-thrift-store material, mostly. But let's dig through the pile anyway, because Yes, We Can Too... kind of.

Unfortunate Profile Pictures, Slavic Style

Though making an ass out of yourself on the internet is not culturally exclusive, let's gander at the Slavic strain of the phenomena, distinguished by a joyous lack of judgement, heavy abuse of photoshop, and an abundance of wall carpets.

Video: Saga of Corruption, $230 Million and The Country's Image

Hermitage Capital Management, one of the major Russian investment banks, was forced to shut down and relocate to London, with several employees accused of fraud and put in prison. The bank alleged that it became victim of corrupt government officials and competitors with links to the Russian secret service, who helped to fake evidence and steal $230 million in taxes, paid by Hermitage.

Happy Birthday, Putin…NOT

It’s Vladimir Putin’s 57th birthday today! The patriarch called to congratulate the prime minister, as did Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, affectionately known as “Europe’s last dictator.” Even dissidents marked the occasion. Nezavisimaya Gazeta published a mocking ode (“I love you so tenderly and so sincerely.") wishing the prime minister would trade up titles, from “prime minister” to “God.”

In Russia, Artists Look At You

This October, Moscow hosts the 3rd Contemporary Art Biennale. As exaggerated as everything else in Russia, passion for contemporary art reached previously unseen levels, with major exhibitions taking place in 39 locations across the city and thousands of people crowding the openings. Those who did not make it to the galleries still got a glimpse of the art or, rather, of the artists, whose photos, in a truly contemporary-art way, became an art installation in itself. Huge screens with photos of the 20 most celebrated Russian contemporary artists hanged from the underpass near Vinzavod Art Center, a space where Moscow's major art galleries are located.

High-Speed Train Puts Joy Back Into Travel

"I took the new train to Sheremetyevo. It's brilliant!" In September, our Facebook page was filled with similar messages from our Moscow friends, who tried taking the new high-speed train from downtown Moscow to the city's busiest international airport, Sheremetyevo, and loved it. Travellers were no doubt counting the days until the train service was open -- it now takes 35 minutes to get to the airport instead of dreadful two or more hours of sitting in a giant traffic jam that is Moscow.

Extreme Case of Book Deflation (And Nude Photos)

With financial crisis in Russia in full swing, we thought it would be fun to check on Sergey Rodionov, the eccentric Russian oligarch who financed a Taschen book in which his wife is photographed naked with other men, women, and, as we recall, animals.

Mikhail Prokhorov Bought the Nets Because He Read That He Bought the Nets

Do you know how Russian oligarchs buy NBA team? They read that they bought the team, which is not true, get aggravated and buy the damn team. At least, that's what happened to Mikhail Prokhorov a few weeks ago.
