Russian Ads Abuse Obama Privileges

Barack Obama's face on a condom wrapper seems altogether tasteful compared to some of the Obama-adorned ads seen in Russia today.

Two choice examples: the first one, a flier for a dental clinic, shows President Obama flashing his pearly whites below a banner screaming "Full Stomatological Democracy!" (no idea what that means, but the clinic promises "a tried-and-true American approach and service.") The second is infinitely more problematic. It's an announcement for a Moscow tanning salon bearing the face of none other than America's 44th. Yes. You understood correctly. It's as embarrassing to write about as it is to read about.

And we won't even go into the implications of those Russian LiveJournalists who have taken to addressing Obama by the faux-patronymic, Barack Husseinovich.

Putin Treats Big Shots To Big Apartments, On The House

 by Katya Tylevich
It’s official! Bureaucrats are getting unwarranted perks from Vladimir Putin in broad daylight now, economic meltdown be damned. And not mere kickbacks, but pimped-out apartments — financed with taxpayer rubles, of course. All an official needs to be eligible is one year of government service under his belt. To clarify, “official,” can mean anything from a minister in the federal branch to a clerk who just hangs around the office kissing ass and drinking buttermilk. And yes, all of this comes courtesy of the Russian taxpayer.

London’s New Million-Dollar Mullet, or Where’s Yevgeny Chichvarkin?

 by Katya Tylevich
This Wednesday, January 28, a Russian court will consider issuing an international warrant for the arrest of Yevgeny Chichvarkin, former chairman of Euroset, the largest mobile phone retailer in Russia. Officially, Chichvarkin is wanted for the alleged 2003 kidnapping and extortion of a former employee. Unofficially, Chichvarkin is being told to “get out and stay out” for getting too big for his faded, designer britches.

Russo-Georgian Information War Hits East Village

 by Michael Idov
The notion of an “information war” in the wake of the actual Russian-Georgian hostilities has gotten a lot of attention in its time. One would be forgiven for thinking that some amazingly complicated PR strategies are being deployed on both sides. In actuality, the “war” mostly consists of both Russia and Georgia trying to impress a who-hit-whom-first narrative on a completely indifferent American public, and doing it in the clumsiest manner possible.
