Arshavin Scores Four Goals; Vodka Consumption Rises in Moscow

Russian soccer player Andrei Arshavin, who is playing for London's Arsenal this season, scored four goals in a game against Liverpool (the game ended with 4-4 draw.) Arshavin's thrilling performance was greeted with joy and happiness in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the player's home city. The sports bars in Russia booked record profits that day as many of the Arshavin's fans came to cheer and got increasingly excited over the course of the game.

Witnesses tell us that at John Donn, the new popular Moscow sports pub, things got completely out of hand. After the third goal, oligarchs, journalists, artists and even some middle class gentlemen present at the bar were hugging each other, fraternizing and, in some cases, kissing. After Arshavin scored for the fourth time, the cheering crowd vacated the pub and marched down Bolshaya Nikitskaya street chanting Shava, Shava (Arshavin's nickname among fans.)

Andrei Arshavin, 27 rose to prominence during Euro 2008 cup when he helped Russia to the semi-finals. The Russia team made it that far in the prestigious cup for the first time in years, creating a wave of patriotism and renewed interest in soccer. Arshavin joined Zenith St. Petersburg soccer club in 2000 and transferred to Arsenal in January of 2009.

Yes, I watched this game. It was really, REALLY entertaining. Is Arshavin the most famous soccer player from Russia? Is he the only one? What about Sychev and others? Are they still around?

Russia can have only one famous sports figure at a time: Kournikova, Sharapova, Arshavin... Come on, it's a huge country, they ought to have more than one brilliant soccer player given that EVERYONE plays soccer in Russia.
